Infographics - Safety technologies

  • This infographic describes different types of safety technologies installed on motorcycles and cars that are intended to address different types of riding hazards and road user errors that can lead to single and multi-vehicle crashes. Some of these systems are already available while others are still in development and testing.

The Observation Cycle

Always keep your eyes moving while you are riding or driving:

  • look at least 12 seconds ahead

  • scan from one side of the road to the other, checking for potential hazards

  • glance in your mirrors to keep track of what is happening behind you

Then start all over again. You should complete the whole cycle every five to eight seconds.

Case Study 1

The crash occurred on a weekday in afternoon rush hour traffic. The rider of a motorcycle was driving along a main road in a Southwest direction. Around one major intersection, there were traffic jams due to high the traffic volume. While approaching the intersection, the rider was passing the queue of stopped vehicles on their left. The rider entered the intersection despite poor visibility due to traffic conditions which were slow. Simultaneously, the driver of a passenger car entered the same intersection from the North, having a green light and right of way. The two road users collided in the middle of the intersection. The motorcyclist was seriously injured in the crash.

Case Study 2

The crash occurred in the afternoon. The scene was an urban environment with 50 km/h speed limit. The car driver stopped at the stop sign to let traffic pass. Due to the presence of structures and an additional construction site barrier, the driver did not see the motorcycle rider approaching. The driver pulled out, colliding with the motorcyclist who fell and was badly injured.

Case Study 3

The crash occurred in the early evening in light traffic and good lighting along the roadway. A car driver was traveling east before moving into a left turning lane opposite the entrance to a commercial parking lot. Meanwhile, a motorcycle rider was traveling from the opposite direction. Instead of giving way and waiting for the motorcycle to pass, the driver failed to notice the approaching PTW, and proceeded to make the turn, colliding with the motorcyclist. The rider was seriously injured.
